U.S.-NIGERIEN RELATIONS U.S. relations with Niger have generally been close and friendly since Niger attained independence. Although USAID does not have an office in Niger, $8 million in official aid is administered through American and local non-governmental organizations with programs addressing food security, HIV/AIDS, and democracy and governance. The U.S. Peace Corps program, started in Niger in 1962, currently has about 140 volunteers in country.
